A Brief History of the Messenger Bag

The classic look of the messenger bag we can recognize today evolved to the needs of the Pony Express riders. They needed a compact secure way to carry documents across the country under extreme conditions that could be easily handed off to the next rider. They were often called “mochilas” and attached to the saddle. It was a small evolutionary jump to take the “mochila” on the saddle and sling it around your shoulder to become a personal document case.

The Earliest version of the messenger bag we have any evidence for is the “Loculos”, which was a narrow leather single strap shoulder bag that the Roman infantry kept their personal belongings in while on campaign. No physical bag has survived through the millennia. We have evidence for them in the historical record with descriptions, images and carvings that have survived.

Nowadays the messenger bag remains a staple of students and professionals for carrying their daily work needs. While the contents may have changed from ancient soldier effects to frontier mail and now to laptops and notepads their use as a secure carrier for across the globe or just down to the local cafe has never changed.
